April 2025 Hide Sale

Both of these pieces are from the same moose hide. The cow (female) moose was killed by vehicle impact in early 2023 by Ojibway Provincial Park, outside of Sioux Lookout, Treaty 3 territory. The meat and skin were harvested by a family friend, who gifted the hide to me.  

I began tanning this moose hide in January 2023 and finished it in April 2025. I used the hide at two teaching opportunities, and finished the rest of it at home. No, thats incorrect. I asked a friend who does a different method of tanning to experiment on this hide with me.  I had him tumble this hide in his large tumbler to see how it would soften.  It got a start on the softening process and we both learned about the different tanning we do.  Then, I did the rest of the tanning at home. It was smoked for 11 hours over two days in April 2025. The flesh side is a light tan colour (from a shorter smoke) and the hair side is a beautiful golden colour. The smell is quite strong as it was smoked so recently.

There were quite a few holes in the hide from teaching and from me. With that in mind, I decided to cut out the best pieces for others to use and enjoy.

Both pieces are soft and supple, but are not flawless. Please watch the videos on each piece to see how the hide moves, pass the needle test, and for information about the flaws.  The colour in photos of the smaller piece are more accurate to how they look in person.
